The UK government’s goal to reset relations with the European Union does not imply reversing Brexit, according to Sir Keir Starmer. Speaking at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Starmer emphasized the desire for a closer relationship with Europe but ruled out rejoining the single market or customs union. The prime minister also dismissed plans for a youth mobility scheme, despite the EU’s proposal, focusing instead on economic, defense, and cultural cooperation.

During their meeting, Starmer and Scholz discussed a new cooperation agreement aimed at boosting trade, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth in both nations. The leaders hope to finalize a treaty covering areas like defense, energy security, and technology by early next year. They also agreed on a joint action plan to combat illegal migration and smuggling by sharing intelligence and data.

While Starmer has previously sought a better trade deal with the EU than the one negotiated by Boris Johnson in 2020, it remains unclear whether Brussels would consider significant changes to the existing Brexit trade agreement, which is set for review in 2026. Starmer reiterated that the reset with Europe is focused on building closer ties across various fronts, not on reversing Brexit.

Regarding the possibility of student exchanges, Starmer expressed interest in fostering educational and cultural ties between the UK and Germany but noted that detailed discussions on this were not the focus of his talks with Scholz, which centered more on addressing illegal immigration.
