Kenyan police have enforced a ban on protests in Nairobi’s central area and surrounding regions “until further notice,” citing concerns over their decentralized organization, which complicates ensuring safety.

The ban follows a month of protests against the government during which numerous casualties were reported. Additional protests are scheduled for Thursday.

Nairobi’s city center has been a focal point for the youth-led demonstrations, which have also occurred nationwide.

Initially triggered by unpopular tax hikes, the protests have evolved to encompass broader grievances, including calls for President William Ruto’s resignation.

Online calls have urged people to assemble at Uhuru Park on Thursday before proceeding to State House, the president’s official residence.

Late Wednesday, police announced the ban on demonstrations in the Nairobi Central Business District and surrounding areas to safeguard public safety.

The ban has sparked online outcry, with some arguing that it exceeds police authority, given Kenyan law guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.
