Boeing’s chief executive, David Calhoun, is facing questions from US lawmakers regarding the company’s safety and quality control practices. The aircraft manufacturer has been under scrutiny after a door blew off a 737 Max shortly after takeoff in January.
Calhoun has apologized to the families of the 346 victims who died in two separate but similar 737 Max crashes. During the Senate hearing, victims’ families attended and shouted at Calhoun while holding photos of their loved ones.
Previously, a Boeing engineer testified to a Senate sub-committee that he faced harassment and threats after raising concerns about the safety of the company’s planes. Calhoun acknowledges that Boeing’s culture is “far from perfect” but insists that the company is taking action to improve.
