Around 1,000 animals perished in a fire that swept through Bangkok’s renowned open-air Chatuchak market early Tuesday, devastating nearly 100 shops.

The tragic incident, attributed to an electrical short circuit according to authorities, primarily affected the pet zone where birds, dogs, cats, snakes, and other creatures were trapped in their cages and unable to escape the flames.

Fortunately, there were no human casualties or injuries reported. However, the devastating loss of life has reignited calls for authorities to address the substandard conditions in the pet zone, which has long been criticized for its high rates of disease and death among animals.

Chatuchak market, one of Southeast Asia’s largest with tens of thousands of shops sprawled across narrow lanes, attracts nearly 200,000 tourists every weekend. The pet zone, a contentious area comprising about four of the market’s 27 sections, remains open throughout the week despite ongoing inspections aimed at ensuring animal welfare.

This tragic event underscores ongoing concerns about the conditions within this part of the market and highlights the need for renewed efforts to improve animal welfare standards.
