South Korea has announced its intention to resume propaganda broadcasts aimed at North Korea after a six-year hiatus, in response to Pyongyang’s recent campaign of sending balloons filled with rubbish across the border. Over the weekend, more than 300 North Korean balloons were detected, with approximately 80 landing in South Korea carrying scrap paper and plastic sheets.
While North Korea has not yet responded to the announcement, it has previously deemed the loudspeaker broadcasts as an act of war and has threatened to destroy them. Last month, North Korea seemed to retaliate against propaganda leaflets sent from the South by launching at least 200 balloons filled with rubbish over the border.
