Police forces worldwide are on alert for Eritrea’s Independence Day this Friday, anticipating potential clashes among diaspora communities. Discontented Eritreans, unable to voice grievances at home, may protest abroad on the 33rd anniversary of the country’s birth, marred by unfulfilled promises of freedom. President Isaias Afwerki’s 33-year rule, devoid of national elections and constitutional governance, has stifled dissent, leaving no room for political opposition or free press. The exodus of Eritrean youth escaping mandatory military conscription has fueled a militant diaspora opposition, epitomized by the Birgade Ni’hamedu. Their focus: disrupting pro-government events and commemorations, challenging the regime they believe forced them into exile.
