“The Israeli Defense Ministry has communicated to the United States that ‘military action is necessary’ in Rafah, according to statements released. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held discussions with his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, on Sunday evening, preceding Israel’s advisory for civilians to evacuate certain areas of eastern Rafah.

Gallant’s office emphasized to Austin the imperative for military intervention in Rafah, citing a lack of viable alternatives, particularly amidst stalled negotiations concerning the release of Israeli hostages. The statement also underscored concerns over Hamas’ perceived lack of commitment to the established frameworks for hostage release.

A Pentagon communication on the call between Gallant and Austin highlighted ongoing discussions around hostage negotiations, humanitarian aid, and the situation in Rafah. Austin reportedly reaffirmed his dedication to facilitating the safe return of hostages to Israel. Additionally, he stressed the importance of any military operation in Rafah incorporating a robust plan for the evacuation of Palestinian civilians and the continuous flow of humanitarian assistance.”
