Across Australia, rallies have surged in response to a string of recent atrocities targeting women. Advocates are demanding a national declaration of gender-based violence as an emergency, coupled with stringent legal measures to curb its prevalence.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has acknowledged the severity of the situation, labeling it a national crisis. With alarming statistics revealing a woman’s life taken every four days this year in Australia, the urgency for action is palpable.

Organizer Martina Ferrara emphasized the need for victim survivors to have alternative reporting avenues, empowering them in their journey of healing and justice. She stressed the imperative for immediate government recognition and action.

Addressing a massive gathering in Canberra, Prime Minister Albanese admitted systemic failures across all governmental levels and the necessity for comprehensive cultural and legal reforms. He highlighted the collective responsibility for men to actively challenge and rectify harmful behaviors.

While protesters called for the classification of violence against women as a national emergency, Mr. Albanese emphasized the ongoing commitment needed to combat this pervasive issue, dismissing temporary measures.

However, Federal Attorney General Mark Dreyfus rejected the proposal for a royal commission into gender-based violence. Despite Mr. Albanese repeatedly terming it an epidemic, gender-based violence has plagued Australia for years, as evidenced by previous nationwide protests in 2021.

Recent tragedies, including the heinous Sydney shopping center stabbing, which claimed the lives of predominantly women, have reignited public outcry. The grim toll of 27 women killed in the first 119 days of 2024 underscores the urgency for decisive action, as highlighted by the campaign group Destroy the Joint.
