The Easter Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, took place in April 1916. Members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, along with other Irish republican groups, seized key locations in Dublin in an attempt to overthrow British rule in Ireland and establish an independent Irish Republic. While the Rising itself was initially suppressed by British forces, it played a significant role in galvanising support for Irish independence and ultimately led to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
