Continued Heavy Rain in Gulf States Sparks Chaos at Dubai Airport

The Gulf states are grappling with relentless heavy rain, resulting in deadly flash floods and severe disruptions at Dubai International Airport, the world’s second-busiest airport. Dubai International Airport has cautioned travelers about “very challenging conditions” and advised some passengers against arriving due to inundated areas.

Further north, a tragic incident occurred as a man lost his life when his car was swept away in flash floods. In Oman, the toll rises to 19 with the discovery of a girl’s body in Saham since Sunday.

On Wednesday alone, Flight Aware data indicates approximately 300 flights to and from Dubai International Airport were canceled, with hundreds more delayed. This major hub, facilitating connections across continents, serves over 80 million passengers annually and predicts a prolonged recovery period.

Emirates, headquartered in Dubai, suspended passenger check-in until Thursday, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Authorities are cautioning against further thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with many low-lying areas still submerged.

The United Arab Emirates encountered its largest recorded rainfall in 75 years, with 254.8mm falling in less than 24 hours in Khatm al-Shakla. These figures starkly contrast with the country’s average annual rainfall of 140-200mm and Dubai’s typical 97mm. The unexpected deluge led to scenes of chaos, with submerged vehicles on Sheikh Zayed Road and extensive traffic congestion.

Reports from within the airport depict disarray and discomfort, with passengers enduring long waits, minimal communication, and inadequate provisions. Despite the easing of rain, Dubai International Airport forewarns of ongoing disruptions and overcrowding, reflecting the intensity of the storm’s impact.
