Belgium Probes Suspected Russian Meddling Ahead of EU Parliament Elections
Belgium is currently conducting an investigation into alleged pro-Russian networks attempting to sway the upcoming EU Parliament elections, less than two months away. Prime Minister Alexander de Croo has voiced concerns over Moscow’s efforts to increase the representation of pro-Russian candidates in the European Parliament, emphasizing the implications for Ukraine’s stability.
Recent revelations from the Czech government regarding the dismantling of a pro-Kremlin network have heightened concerns across Europe. Intelligence agencies in Prague and Poland have pointed to the Voice of Europe news website as a tool financed by Moscow to disseminate propaganda and provide financial support to sympathetic European politicians, although the website has not responded to these allegations.
Confirming Belgian intelligence findings, Prime Minister de Croo highlighted the presence of spy networks operating not only in Belgium but also in several other European countries. He noted that investigations revealed attempts by Moscow to engage with European parliamentarians and potentially influence them through financial means.
While no specific individuals suspected of receiving funds were named, it was clarified that no cash transactions had occurred within Belgium. However, reports suggest that certain far-right politicians in Europe, including those from Germany’s AfD party, have been linked to allegations of receiving Russian support.
The Belgian leader underscored the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the need to prevent such Russian interference in European democratic processes. Coordination efforts have been made with Czech counterparts and EU institutions to address these concerns and ensure the integrity of the upcoming elections.
With Brussels serving as a key hub for EU institutions, the Belgian government is particularly vigilant about safeguarding the electoral process. Meanwhile, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has warned about the broader security implications of the pro-Russian network’s activities and has taken measures, including sanctions, against entities involved in such meddling.
