Russian Strikes Decimate Vital Power Plant Near Kyiv, Ukrainian Energy Company Reports

A major power plant near Kyiv, crucial for electricity supply to three regions, including the capital, was obliterated by Russian airstrikes early Thursday, according to Centrenergo, the energy company overseeing its operations.

Andriy Hota, chairman of Centrenergo, described the extent of the devastation as “terrifying,” highlighting the systematic targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by Russia.

The Trypillya power plant, situated about 50km south of Kyiv, fell victim to a large-scale airborne assault, resulting in a fire engulfing its turbine workshop.

Hota mentioned that multiple missiles were aimed at the facility, but thankfully, the on-duty staff managed to evade harm by seeking shelter upon the first drone strike.

Following the attack, residents were urged to take precautions, including closing windows, charging electronic devices, and stocking up on water.

Over 80 missiles and drones rained down on various Ukrainian sites during the early hours of Thursday, with a significant portion targeting energy facilities. Despite Ukraine’s air defenses, nearly a third of the attacks succeeded.

Hours later, Centrenergo confirmed the complete incapacitation of the Trypillya plant. Hota lamented the loss, noting that the company’s entire generating capacity in Ukraine was now decimated.

The Trypillya plant, alongside others operated by Centrenergo, played a significant role in supplying electricity and heat to the nation. The destruction exacerbates the strain on Ukraine’s energy grid, particularly in the wake of previous attacks on similar infrastructure.

While Hota expressed confidence in the potential for reconstruction with assistance from European partners, he underscored the pressing need for robust air defenses to safeguard against future assaults.

At least two additional thermal power plants in western Ukraine suffered considerable damage overnight, further impeding the nation’s electricity supply. DTEK, another major energy company, condemned the attacks as part of Russia’s ongoing efforts to destabilize Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin justified the strikes as retaliation for alleged Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets, despite initiating the conflict two years prior. The escalation in violence underscores the dire humanitarian and strategic consequences of the ongoing conflict.
