Severe Storm Forces School Closures in Western Cape, South Africa

Parts of South Africa’s Western Cape province, including Cape Town, have witnessed the closure of schools due to a destructive storm that struck over the weekend. The affected areas include the Cape Winelands, Overberg education districts, and the Helderberg basin region, as announced by education authorities on Sunday.

Western Cape Education Minister David Maynier emphasized that the decision to close schools was made cautiously, prioritizing the safety of learners and school staff. “We have not taken the decision to close these schools lightly: we have done so out of an abundance of caution to protect our learners and school staff. It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” Maynier stated.

Social media platforms were flooded with dramatic videos showcasing the storm’s intensity, including footage of strong winds forcefully pushing vehicles, including a truck, off a bridge. Other images depicted vehicles overturned by the gale force winds. Numerous roads were closed to prevent accidents, with authorities urging residents to refrain from unnecessary travel and stay off the roads.

The destructive winds caused significant damage, including the blowing off of roofs, uprooting of trees, and fueling wildfires. Notably, a wine farm in Stellenbosch and more than three properties in the Glencairn area were ravaged by the storm.

Predictions indicate that the severe winds will persist into Monday, with the weather service issuing warnings of heavy rains that could lead to flooding. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions amid the ongoing weather challenges.
