The death of seven aid workers in Gaza, allegedly in an Israeli air strike, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from around the world.

The charity World Central Kitchen (WCK) reported that among those killed were workers from various countries including the UK, Poland, Australia, and a dual US-Canadian citizen. WCK founder and chef José Andrés asserted that they were targeted in an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) air strike, a claim that the IDF stated was under thorough review.

Gaza’s Hamas-run media office also placed blame on Israel for the incident. Although independent verification of the strike was not immediately available, a journalist for the BBC in Gaza confirmed the recovery of bodies, including those of three international aid workers and a Palestinian driver, along with foreign passports.

The CEO of WCK, Erin Gore, expressed deep sorrow and condemnation, emphasizing the humanitarian mission of the workers and their dedication to alleviating suffering. The charity announced an immediate pause in operations in the region.

Among the victims was Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, an Australian aid worker whose death prompted a statement of grief and demand for accountability from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Australian government stressed the importance of safe access for humanitarian workers in conflict zones.

In response to the incident, Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, expressed deep concern and called for a swift investigation by Israel.

The IDF stated that they were conducting a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and emphasized their efforts to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The tragic loss of these aid workers underscores the dangers faced by those providing essential assistance in conflict zones and highlights the urgent need for measures to protect humanitarian workers and ensure their safety.
