Maryland Governor Unveils Plan to Address Aftermath of Cargo Ship Collision with Baltimore Bridge
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has revealed initial strategies for the cleanup efforts following a tragic collision between a cargo ship and a major bridge in Baltimore, resulting in six fatalities.
To assist with the endeavor, the Biden administration has greenlit $60 million in emergency funds, as requested by Maryland.
Governor Moore outlined the comprehensive plan, which encompasses debris clearance, ship removal, bridge section extraction, and eventual reconstruction.
Acknowledging the immense task ahead, Governor Moore emphasized the challenges, notably the size of the cargo vessel named Dali, nearly as lengthy as the Eiffel Tower, and the intricate process of maneuvering beneath the Key Bridge, which rests atop the ship.
In contrast to past incidents, such as the Suez Canal blockage in 2021, the current situation presents unique complexities, with thousands of tons of steel resting atop the vessel and challenging underwater conditions, where divers’ visibility is severely limited.
The state has mobilized various resources for assistance, including the involvement of the US Army Corps of Engineers and specialized cranes for debris removal.
Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath highlighted the need to fragment debris from the bridge for crane lifting, while Governor Moore addressed the containment of hazardous materials from the ship, including thousands of cargo containers, some carrying volatile substances like lithium batteries and perfume.
Moreover, plans are underway to provide economic relief to affected workers, with around 8,000 individuals impacted by the incident.
Despite the considerable recovery costs, additional federal assistance is expected to alleviate the financial burden, with Senator Chris Van Hollen pledging to introduce legislation for further funding.
The urgent priority remains the swift and safe reopening of the port of Baltimore, vital for global supply chains, underscoring the critical importance of expeditious bridge reconstruction efforts.
