A French court has revised the life sentence of former Liberian rebel, Kunti Kamara, to 30 years in prison for his involvement during Liberia’s civil war three decades ago.
Upon his initial trial in 2022, subsequent to his arrest in France, he was convicted of crimes against humanity and violence against civilians, receiving a life sentence. However, he appealed this decision.
Despite the reduction of his sentence by the Paris criminal court on Wednesday, Kamara was again found guilty of the war crimes.
The prosecution had advocated for upholding his life sentence.
Kamara served as a regional commander of a faction of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy, which opposed the National Patriotic Front led by former President Charles Taylor.
The conflict, spanning from 1989 to 2003, claimed the lives of over 250,000 individuals.
