President Biden Criticizes Netanyahu’s Handling of Gaza Situation
President Joe Biden has voiced his disagreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to the Gaza conflict, describing it as a “mistake” in a recent interview. Biden emphasized the importance of ensuring Gaza’s access to essential supplies such as food and medicine for the next six to eight weeks.
Last week, Biden warned that continued U.S. support for Israel during the conflict hinged on allowing more aid into Gaza. Israel refuted claims of hindering aid distribution and pointed fingers at UN agencies for alleged inefficiencies.
Despite weeks of negotiations, a ceasefire agreement remains elusive, with mounting international pressure for resolution.
During the interview, which took place last Wednesday and aired on Tuesday night, Biden condemned the recent Israeli military strikes that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen. He described the incidents involving the aid organization’s vehicles as “outrageous” and criticized the use of drones in the attacks.
Biden called for Israel to declare a ceasefire and ensure unimpeded access for food and medicine into Gaza for the specified timeframe. He reiterated that any pause in hostilities would require Hamas to agree and release remaining hostages.
Israel recently announced plans to open a crossing to northern Gaza and a deep-water port for increased aid flow, though details on implementation remain pending.
President Biden faces growing domestic pressure regarding U.S. support for Israel, with heightened criticism towards Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict. Despite this, military supplies from the U.S. to Israel continue unabated.
The Gaza conflict, which began with Hamas-led attacks on southern Israeli border communities on October 7th, has resulted in significant casualties and ongoing hostilities. Israel reports that a substantial number of hostages remain in Gaza, while Hamas-run health authorities cite high civilian casualties during Israel’s offensive.
