The first handheld mobile telephone call was made on April 3, 1973, by Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola. He made the call from a Motorola DynaTAC prototype, a handheld mobile phone, and called Joel Engel, the head of research at Bell Labs, which was AT&T’s research and development arm at the time. This historic call marked the beginning of the era of mobile communications.
