A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan’s eastern coast at 7:58 am (23:58 GMT), felt across Taipei, southern Japan, eastern China, and the Philippines. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) later upgraded the magnitude to 7.7, while Taiwan reported it as 7.2 and the USGS as 7.4. At least four fatalities and 711 injuries are confirmed, with significant damage in Hualien and surrounding rural areas. Numerous individuals remain trapped. Tsunami warnings issued by authorities in Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines have since been lifted.
