Ex-Colonel Claude Pivi, a former senior military officer who escaped from prison last November, has been extradited from Liberia, along with his son, Verny Pivi.
Pivi is set to serve his life sentence after being convicted in absentia for his involvement in the 2009 stadium massacre in Conakry, where over 156 opposition supporters were killed. Guinea’s military prosecutor confirmed the extradition following their arrest during a routine security check at the border.
Images shared online depict a frail Pivi in handcuffs next to his son, who is accused of orchestrating the prison break.
Also involved in the case, former military leader Moussa Dadis Camara was briefly released but has since been recaptured and is currently serving a 20-year sentence for crimes against humanity. The charges stem from one of the darkest events in Guinea’s history, when troops opened fire on a rally demanding a return to civilian rule.
