Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP Resigns as DUP Leader Following Rape and Historical Sexual Offences Charges
Following allegations of rape and historical sexual offences, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP has stepped down from his position as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The charges also extend to a 57-year-old woman who has been accused of aiding and abetting in connection with the alleged offences.
Both individuals were arrested by PSNI detectives on Thursday morning and subsequently charged on Thursday night after questioning. Sir Jeffrey has expressed his intention to vigorously contest the charges.
In response to the developments, the DUP released a statement confirming receipt of Sir Jeffrey’s letter announcing his resignation and the charges against him. Per party rules, Sir Jeffrey has been suspended from membership pending the judicial process. Mr Gavin Robinson MP has been appointed interim party leader by unanimous decision of party officers.
Sir Jeffrey’s letter to the DUP reiterates his determination to contest the charges brought against him.
