Tasmania’s Winter Tourism Boosted by “Odd Jobs” Initiative

Tasmania has launched a tongue-in-cheek initiative aimed at boosting winter tourism. The Australian island state is inviting people to trade their daily routines for unconventional temporary roles during the off-season.

Among the 10 advertised positions are roles such as paranormal investigator, wombat walker, and stargazer. Despite being unpaid, successful applicants will have all expenses covered by the Tasmanian tourist board, including travel, food, and accommodation.

For instance, the paranormal investigator role, which lasts for just one day, invites enthusiasts interested in “history and mystery” to use the latest ghost-hunting equipment at Willow Court, one of Australia’s oldest asylums.

Another unique opportunity is the “oyster organiser” position, where responsibilities include sorting, cleaning, and categorizing freshly harvested oysters from Great Oyster Bay. There’s even a chance for quality control through taste-testing, though this is purely for assessing oyster quality, according to Tourism Tasmania.

This initiative aims not only to attract visitors but also to showcase Tasmania’s diverse attractions and experiences during the quieter winter months.
