The captain of a RESQSHIP aid vessel recounted the dramatic efforts to rescue migrants from a sinking wooden boat off Italy’s coast. Ingo Veert described how his crew initially saved 50 migrants from the distressed boat near Lampedusa before using axes and hammers to reach two men trapped below deck. Tragically, they found 10 others had perished in the ship’s lower compartments. Meanwhile, another vessel sank near Calabria, leaving 64 people missing at sea. These incidents highlight the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants crossing the Mediterranean, with many paying significant sums for the risky voyage from Libya and Turkey.
