Despite reports of expelling two Indian spies in 2020, Australia emphasizes its strong relationship with Delhi. The Australian government refrains from confirming or denying the reports, highlighting the importance of countering foreign interference. Treasurer Jim Chalmers emphasizes the growing economic ties between the two nations.
In 2021, Australia’s intelligence chief mentioned foreign agents operating locally without specifying their nationality. However, recent reports indicate that the expelled spies were from India. This follows a speech by Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (Asio) chief Mike Burgess, detailing espionage activities targeting sensitive information and personnel.
While Asio declines to comment on the matter, concerns are raised about India’s alleged covert actions abroad, including accusations related to the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Despite these challenges, Australia and India continue to strengthen their relationship through various agreements targeting trade, energy, and migration, and as members of the Quad alliance, aimed at bolstering security in the Indo-Pacific.
