A significant bridge in Baltimore, USA, collapsed into the Patapsco River following a collision with a container ship. The incident occurred around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT), resulting in the bridge breaking and plunging into the water, along with vehicles and individuals.
Authorities have launched a large-scale search operation for six missing individuals, presumed to be part of a construction crew working on repairing potholes when the collapse transpired. So far, two people have been rescued from the water.
The container ship became wedged amidst debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a crucial segment of a major highway spanning 3km (1.6 miles). Officials reported that the ship experienced a “power issue” and issued a distress call moments before the collision. However, due to its velocity, it was unable to alter its course.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has pledged to reconstruct the bridge “in a manner that honors the individuals affected by this tragedy.” President Biden has assured that the federal government will finance the “complete cost” of rebuilding the bridge and restoring port operations.
