Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has adamantly declared his opposition to any sanctions targeting the nation’s military, following reports of a potential aid cut to a specific unit by the US.
“I will vehemently oppose this,” asserted the prime minister on Sunday.
Earlier, Axios reported that the US intended to focus on Israel’s Netzah Yehuda battalion due to alleged human rights violations in the occupied West Bank. In response to queries last week regarding potential aid cuts over allegations of abuses, Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at forthcoming determinations.
Washington, Israel’s primary ally, has never previously halted aid to an IDF unit.
The Israeli military maintains that Netzah Yehuda operates within international legal bounds.
“In light of reports about sanctions against the battalion, the IDF is not informed of such measures,” stated the military via Reuters. “The IDF remains committed to investigating any irregularities in a pragmatic and lawful manner.”
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant urged the US to retract its intent to sanction Netzah Yehuda, emphasizing heightened global scrutiny of US-Israel ties.
“Criticizing an entire unit tarnishes the IDF’s actions,” declared Mr. Gallant, cautioning against such measures between partners and allies.
